Man's Leg Caught In Stump Grinder In Suffolk

The man, while working at a house, lost his footing and had his leg become entangled in a stump grinder, police say.

DIX HILLS, NY — A man was seriously injured when his leg got caught in a stump grinder in Dix Hills on Friday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

Rubiel Cordoso Chavez, 33, of Huntington Station, was working for Traditional Tree Service of Smithtown at a house on Ryder Avenue during the incident, police said. Chavez slipped, lost his footing, and his leg became entangled in a stump grinder around 12:55 p.m., police said. The Dix Hills Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Department Emergency Services were able to free Chavez.

Chavez was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified.
