Mobile Camper Goes Ablaze On Long Island Expressway

Dix Hills firefighters doused the flames. The cause of the fire appeared accidental.

DIX HILLS, NY — Dix Hills firefighters battled a mobile camper fire after the vehicle erupted into flames on the Long Island Expressway near Dix Hills on Saturday morning.

The camper was at the Long Island Welcome Center on the eastbound L.I.E. between the Deer Park Avenue and Commack Road exits when it caught fire around 10:50 a.m., said public information officer Steve Silverman.

Firefighters found the camper, parked along the back road of the center, engulfed in flames.

Firefighters quickly had the blaze under control and removed and secured the propane tanks. The cause of the fire appears accidental and is being investigated by the NYS Fire Marshal. There were no injuries reported, Silverman said.

Two engines and an ambulance were dispatched under the direction of Second Assistant Chief Scott DiPino.
