Overturned 18-Wheeler Causes Fuel Spill on Route 110

The incident caused all southbound lanes to close during Tuesday morning rush hour.

The southbound lanes of Route 110 in Melville were closed during Tuesday morning rush hour after an 18-wheel dump truck overturned and caused a large fuel spill.

According to fire officials, the truck was making a turn on Route 110 and South Service Road when the full load of dirt it was carrying shifted and caused the truck to overturn on its side and rupture both diesel fuel tanks at around 5:30 a.m.

About 50 gallons of fuel spilled onto the road, which subsequently caused the lane closures.

The Melville Fire Department responded to the scene and used an absorbent to contain the spill, which stopped the fuel runoff from entering nearby storm drains, fire officials say.

Firefighters responded with three engines, a heavy rescue truck and an ambulance. All units were under the direction of Assistant Chiefs Paul Mahler and David Kaplan.
