PTA Founders Day

Half Hollow Hills PTA Council recently hosted their annual Founder’s Day Event at the Melville Marriott.

PTA Council president Marietta Costa said, “Change is inevitable, but PTA’s presence is constant. PTA is creativity, communication, and collaboration. These are the skills by which PTA was founded and those required for the 21st century.”

Special honorees included PTA Council past president Corrie Ann Young, retiring teacher/coach for Hills West’s Wranglerettes Danceline Lucille Kenney, School Lunch Director Bonnie Scally, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Facilities Victor Manuel, and retiring Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sheldon Karnilow, who received the prestigious PTA Golden Oak Award.

 The Golden Oak Award is presented by local PTA chapters to honor individuals for their exceptional achievements, outstanding dedication and their valuable service to children and schools.  

At presenting the award to Dr. Karnilow, Costa said, "PTA strives to make every child's potential a reality.  Dr. Karnilow's leadership has provided not only increased opportunities for our students but vigorous support of PTA and our programs. HHH PTA Council honors the inspiration and dedication of Dr. Karnilow with the NYS PTA Golden Oak Award and hopes that his philosophy and vision remain permanent parts of the Half Hollow Hills community."

On accepting the award, Karnilow said, "The Golden Oak has special significance for me. It is tremendously gratifying to be acknowledged by an organization that works so hard to support the children of our district.  I respect and admire their commitment and dedication as advocates for all stakeholders in our school community.”

Founded in 1897, the PTA is a national volunteer organization dedicated to establishing a united home-school relationship that will secure for all children and youth, the greatest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education. Council members participate in a variety of educational, social, cultural, and legislative committees that meet monthly. Several fundraising events are planned throughout the year to support many district initiatives.
