SUV Crashes Into Melville Office Building

A man crashed through a Melville office building while teaching his wife how to drive Saturday afternoon, officials say.

According to police, the 55-year-old man was driving a Volkswagen sports utility vehicle through a parking lot when he lost control of his vehicle, drove through a fence and crashed into the side of a chiropractor's office, located at 900 Walt Whitman Road, at 2:30 p.m. The crash destroyed the reception room desk and heavily damaged the unoccupied office, which closed at 1 p.m.

The man and his 47-year-old wife were not injured.

About 20 member of the Melville Fire Department responded to crash to find the couple still inside the vehicle. The couple was extricated and evaluated at the scene by Melville Rescue Squad personnel and declined transport to the hospital.

Firefighters were on the scene with two ambulances, an engine, heavy rescue truck, fire police and paramedic responder units, which were under the command of Chief Jason Bernfeld and Assistant Chiefs David Kaplan and Bill Schmitt.

The Town of Huntington Building Inspector was notified.
