Half Hollow Hills Library Offering On-Line Courses

The world is constantly changing and so is your library.

Not only can you from the Half Hollow Hills Community Library’s website, now you can take classes online.

Ellen Druda, head of Internet Services for the library, said, “The library has always been a place of learning, and now we’ve extended our hours and virtual doors so library patrons can take self-paced classes online, 24/7.  There is something in there for everyone!”

UniversalClass has more than 500 courses to pick from – everything from alternative medicine, to home schooling, financial management, digital photography, philosophy, animal studies, and beauty lessons.  The courses are taught by accredited teachers and many offer CEU credits.   

UniversalClass has live instructors that offer continual feedback, video-based lessons, a collaborative learning environment, certificates of achievement, and CEUs that meet IACET standards.

What are CEUs? Druda explained: “One of the most exciting things about UniversalClass is the offer of CEUs - continuing education units.  Many professions, including teachers (and librarians) need to get a minimum number of these in order to stay in their jobs.  In the past they had to pay for a course. Now with their library cards, they are free. Our children's librarians like it for the home-schooling classes available to parents.  And our wonderful community of retired people will love it not only because it offers introductory classes to begin a second career, but also because of its wide-ranging choices that stimulate thought and creativity.”

Those interested may enroll in up to five courses and are given up to six months to finish each course, which can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week via the Internet. Participants have the flexibility to choose when to attend classes and complete assignments. A live instructor gives each course and all communication is done by e-mail. All courses are non-credit classes that are designed to provide for personal enrichment and are not intended to be a substitute for any state, government, licensing, or educational requirements.
