East Harlem Woman Killed Her Aunt With A Hammer, Prosecutors Say

The woman is expected to be sentenced to 16-years-to-life in prison.

EAST HARLEM, NY — An East Harlem woman has pleaded guilty to fatally beating her aunt with a hammer in 2022, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Thursday.

Kristie Miro, 34, admitted in Manhattan Supreme Court to second-degree murder in the death of her 56-year-old aunt, Ana Nieves, inside Nieves’ East 100th Street apartment, prosecutors said.

She is expected to be sentenced on Nov. 12, 2025, to 16 years to life in state prison, Bragg said.

"Kristie Miro committed a brutal and deadly act of family violence that took her aunt’s life," Bragg said. "I hope this measure of accountability can bring some comfort to Ms. Nieves’ loved ones, who continue to endure the effects of this senseless tragedy."

Prosecutors said Miro lived with her aunt and, on Feb. 9, 2022, told a cousin she was upset after a breakup and angry that Nieves wanted her out of the apartment, which is on East 100th Street between Third Avenue and Lexington Avenue.

The next day, Nieves was found dead in her bathtub, still wearing blood-soaked clothes from the night before, Bragg said.

Investigators later recovered the hammer used in the killing in Miro’s bedroom, Bragg said.

Miro was arrested a few days later on Feb. 13, 2022.
