Elevator Upgrades Completed At Harlem Station

HARLEM, NY — Three new elevators are now up and running at the 125th Street–St. Nicholas Avenue subway station, marking an early finish for a project aimed at improving accessibility at one of Upper Manhattan’s busiest transit hubs.

The work, completed two months ahead of schedule, is part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s ongoing push to make more stations compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Contractor Forte Construction Corp., which completed the upgrades, said.

The elevators provide improved access between street level, mezzanine and platforms serving the A, C, B and D trains, which connect riders across West and Central Harlem.

Construction crews replaced aging hydraulic elevators and upgraded related infrastructure, including machine rooms and elevator shafts.

Project manager Elif Chavez said the upgrades are intended to make daily commutes easier for thousands of riders.

"Working with the MTA to enhance the rider experience and expand access across Harlem is something we are proud of," Chavez said. "It means more people can get to where they need to go, whether that’s to work, to school, or to one of the many community landmarks that make this neighborhood so special."
