15-Year-Old Killed When Car Hit Disabled Vehicle In I-684 Crash

The teen was a passenger in a car that was in an earlier accident when the car she had just exited was hit by another car.

HARRISON, NY — A teenage girl died after being struck by a car following an earlier accident on the interstate highway over the holiday weekend.

On Monday, just before 1:30 a.m., troopers were called to I-684 in Harrison, near mile marker 1.4 northbound, on a report that a car had hit the median guardrail and was some time later hit by a second vehicle.

Tyanna Spalding, age 19, of Waterbury, Connecticut, was driving a 2018 Hyundai Sonata, northbound on I-684 when she struck the median and the car became disabled in the left lane. Spalding and her passenger, Destiny Coleman, age 15, also of Waterbury, both exited the Hyundai.

The car was then struck by a 2012 Toyota Prius driven by a woman from Beacon, according to police.

The Hyundai Sonata was pushed into Coleman, who was killed. Responding Westchester EMS paramedics pronounced Coleman deceased on the scene.

Both Spalding and the driver of the Prius were treated at Westchester Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, according to officials.

In a statement released Tuesday, the New York State Police said that the crash remains under investigation.

The Westchester Medical Examiner's Office was on scene investigating. The West Harrison and Purchase Fire Departments responded to the collision.
