They work all day and attend class at night, but 25 students, alumni and friends of NYU Stern Westchester still found the time to volunteer for Westchester’s Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, held Sunday, October 21 at SUNY Purchase College.
The NYU Stern Westchester team participated for the second year in a row, thanks to the efforts of its MBA students Sidra Riaz and Lauren Gray. Both Riaz and Gray have lost loved ones to breast cancer and were eager to support the cause. Despite their busy schedules and those of their fellow students, they view serving the local community as an essential part of their education.
“We’re studying to become business leaders, but being a leader isn't just about business. It isn't just about managing. It's also about connecting with people - fellow students, colleagues, our community - and working together to speak louder and achieve something greater than one person might be able to do alone,” said Riaz.

NYU Stern Westchester is part of NYU Stern’s Langone Part-time MBA program for working professionals. While the majority of these part-time MBA students take their classes at NYU Stern’s Washington Square campus, the School developed a Westchester program, located in Purchase, NY, to make pursuing a business education more convenient for professionals living and working in the Westchester and Fairfield County areas. According to Gray, the close-knit culture on the Westchester campus has made community service activities popular among students, despite the students’ endless juggling of work, school and home activities.
It also helps that it’s a good cause.

“The team has built significant momentum, attracting twice as many participants this year compared to last,” she says. “It's all about showing each other that we are in it together to honor those we have lost and support those who are still fighting. And, ultimately to never stop fighting to find a cure.”
