Award-Winning Children’s Author Doreen Rappaport Visits HCSD
Ms. Rappaport Shares Her Insights Into Combining Historical Facts with Personal Narratives

The award-winning children’s author Doreen Rappaport visited the four elementary schools in Harrison. The visiting author program is just one of many elementary learning initiatives supported by the Elementary Enrichment Committee.
Ms. Rappaport, according to her website, has received critical acclaim and awards for her unique ability to combine historical facts with personal narratives, and for finding ‘new ways to present the lives of well-known heroes.’ Her books include Beyond Courage: The Untold Story of Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust, Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Martin Luther King, Eleanor Quiet No More: The Life of Eleanor Roosevelt, and Dirt in our Skirts: The Story of the Young Women who Won the World Championship - to name a few.
Her message to the elementary school students during each visit to the four schools was “You are the future…we need you!” She also let one of Harrison’s newest student shine by co-reading the English version of her book while he read the Japanese translation. The students were enthralled to learn of her writing process and how they can incorporate many of the lessons into their own writing.
