Crossing Guards Needed--for Snapping Turtles

It's egg-laying season for snapping turtles.

There are new crossing guards in Rockland County—and new signs warning drivers of danger.

It’s the time of year that snapping turtles lay their eggs. And they cross Western Highway in West Nyack and Blauvelt NY to do it. In fact, according to the Turtles of Western Highway Facebook page, they’re starting a bit early this year.

Clarkstown and Orangetown police have placed signs urging motorists to drive with caution.

In addition, the turtle help group is looking for volunteers to help control traffic when turtles are crossing over the next three weeks.

“Spare a few hours or as many as you can! Help spread the word. Call 917-657-8935 for details,” organizers say on Facebook.
