Harrison Among Safest Communities In America For 2017

HARRISON, NY — Harrison was one of nine Hudson Valley communities named to the 100 Safest Cities in America list prepared by the SafeWise Report. The team at SafeWise analyzed FBI crime statistics from all 50 states and researched each city's public safety, public health and educational offerings to determine 2017’s list.

In fact, the eastern Westchester corridor seems to be a pretty safe place, according to this list. For the second year in a row, Lewisboro was named the No. 1 Safest City in America. Bedford, New Castle and North Castle also made it into the Top 100 along with Harrison.

All of the communities have a population of at least 10,000 in order to be considered.

Here's what the study said about Harrison:

People love Harrison, New York, so much that every year they throw an It's Great to Live in Harrison parade. And now that this city is back on the Safest Cities in America list, residents have something else to celebrate this year. When researching this city, we were particularly excited to see Harrison’s Dark House program, which allows residents to alert the police if they’re going out of town so police can keep an eye on the property. Because Harrison didn’t report any robberies and had only four burglaries in 2015, programs like these seem to be working!

SafeWise Security Analyst Olga Papadimitriou said, “There is a lot that the nation can learn about community policing, the walkability of safe streets and collaboration between police and neighborhood watch programs to help improve the safety of our cities.”

• 17 New Castle
• 35 Kent
• 50 Harrison
• 51 Sleepy Hollow
• 76 Bedford
• 80 Carmel
• 98 North Castle
