Harrison Police: Safety Bulletin

Three simple security tips for 2017

HARRISON, NY — As the New Year approaches, the Harrison Police highlights a few safety and security tips:

  • Always ensure that your home alarms are activated and valuables are secured in areas other than the Master Bedroom. Also make sure all doors and windows are secured prior to leaving your home.
  • Lock vehicles, remove valuables, and activate vehicle alarms at all times. Ninety-Five percent of vehicle larcenies occur when a vehicle is left unlocked.
  • BE AWARE of “Grandparent Phone Scams”. The caller convinces the grandparent that they are their “grandson”. The “grandson” then informs the grandparent that a series of unfortunate events has landed him in jail, in a hospital, and that he is in need of money. The grandparent might be skeptical since the caller might not sound exactly like their grandson, but the scammer knows that, and that’s when he passes the phone to his “attorney”, or a “law enforcement official”. At this time the caller delivers the details about the charges and information on how to wire the money.
