A primary election is an election that narrows the field of candidates before a general election for office. Primary elections are one means by which a political party or a political alliance nominates candidates for an upcoming general election or by-election. Primaries are common in the United States, where their origins are traced to the progressive movement to take the power of candidate nomination from party leaders to the people.

Helen Pesce, picture above, has earned that right by petitioning and getting on the ballot. As a member of the Independence party she will run against the Republican Candidate (who was previously endorsed by the Independence Party) for the Independence line. There is also a primary on the Republican line for two candidates. There is also an Opt to ballot on the Green and Conservative lines.

Helen has also petitioned for the Independent Line, “Peoples Choice” is the party name selected. When asked why she chose that name, she replied, “It’s about giving the people a choice, so simply I named it Peoples Choice”.
