HHS Girls Tennis' Giambo and Savianos Advance to State Championships

Harrison High School's Deana Giambo and Jessica and Sydney Saviano Also Conference II Singles and Doubles Champions

HHS' sophomores Deana Giambo and Jessica and Sydney Saviano advanced to the New York State Girls Tennis Championships after their outstanding play at the Section 1 tournament, held last week at Harrison High School. Giambo played a tough match against defending New York State Champion Caitlyn Ferrante of Yorktown, falling for the first time all year 4-6, 1-6. The Saviano twins battled for the third spot against
Edgemont's Shrutti Kanna and Ariella Zagorsky - winning in dramatic fashion 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. The three Harrison teammates will travel to Latham, New York this Friday for the New York State GIrls Varsity Tennis Championships to be played at Tri-City Tennis Club Saturday, October 28- Monday, October 30, 2017.

All three of the Harrison players advanced to the semifinal matches held on Thursday. Deana Giambo
played an outstanding match, coming from 1-4 down in the first set to win 6-4, 6-3 against Olivia Ashton of Pleasantville. She beat Carly Levitz of Horace Greeley 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and won her first
round match against Maggie Akuetey of Scarsdale 6-0, 6-1.

Jessica and Sydney Saviano had a difficult task against the #1 seeded and two time State Runner-Up Ursuline team of Campos and Ciano falling 1-6, 4-6. They beat Devon Wolfe and Dana D'Onofrio of Byram Hills 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Rye's Steffi Rodilosso and Jocelyn Stone 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.

Giambo and Savianos Win Conference Championships

Deana GIambo and Jessica and Sydney Saviano captured the Conference II Girls Varsity Singles and Doubles Championships, played at Harrison High School two weeks ago. HHS sophomore Deana Giambo
represented Harrison in Singles play as the #1 seed in the tournament and the reigning Conference II Singles Champion. Deana went undefeated in the regular season this season – amassing an 11-0 record and being
touted by The Journal News as one of the top six players in Section 1. Deana only dropped three games in the entire tournament- beating Elena Nunez of Rye 6-0, 6-0 in the second round, Brooke Lopez of Albertus
Magnus 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, Sophia Feigelson of Lourdes 6-1, 6-1 and Nina Tagliabue of Hendrick Hudson 6-0, 6-1 in the finals.

The dynamic duo of Jessica and Sydney Saviano, also the #1 seeds in the tournament and last year's runner-ups in Conference II tournament, were equally impressive. The two beat the team from Byram Hills 6-0, 6-2 in the second round, beat the team of Elizabeth Kohler and Izzie Chinch of John Jay Cross River 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals, beat Steffi Rodilosso and Jocelyn Stone of Rye 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals, and Devon Wolfe and Dana D'Onofrio of Byram Hills 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.

Also representing Harrison in doubles at the Conference Tournament were:

Sarina Iraj and Yuko Otsuko – this team is the #4 seed in the tournament. With a first round bye, the two took on the pairing of Elodie Weinman and Portia Luongo from Nyack in the second round – beating them 6-2, 6-3. They played the team of Steffi Rodilosso and Jocelyn Stone of Rye in the quarterfinals on Thursday. losing in a third set tie-breaker 6-3, 1-6, 5-10.

Julia Applebaum and Lindsay Amann – this team unfortunately lost in the first round to the Weinman/Luongo team from Nyack in a tough tie breaker – 6-3, 1-6, 5-10.
