HHS Marching Band Represents NY in National Memorial Day Parade
The Harrison High School Marching Band, Color Guard, and Majorettes marched down Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC
The Harrison High School Marching Band, Color Guard and Majorettes were honored to represent the State of New York in this year’s National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC.
The American Veterans Center’s National Memorial Day Parade, held annually along Constitution Avenue, shares the story of American honor and sacrifice from across the generations. The National Memorial Day Parade is a moving timeline of American military history, honoring those who have served and sacrificed from the American Revolution to the present day. It draws on the tradition of Memorial Day parades, going back to the beginning of the holiday just after the Civil War, to create a family friendly event aimed at calling attention to the true meaning of Memorial Day – honoring our fallen heroes, according to the sponsor’s website.
In addition to the parade, the students, teachers, and family members had a chance to see the 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon and view the Air and Space Museum and the American History Museum – part of the family of Smithsonian Museums on the National Mall. The group also saw the outside of the White House and toured several of the monuments around the Tidal Basin.

The group from Harrison also got great seats on the lawn of the Capitol to witness the dress rehearsal of the National Memorial Day Concert with Joe Mantegna, Laurence Fishburne, Renee Fleming, Aulii Cravalho (Moana) and the National Symphony Orchestra. On another evening, they attended a free jazz concert on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
