HHS Senior Christina DeCarlo Named Con Ed Athlete of the Week

Harrison High School senior holds two school records for most doubles and most RBI's in athletic career

Congratulations to Harrison High School senior Christina DeCarlo who was selected as the Con Edison Athlete of the Week. The Con Edison Athlete of the Week recognizes students in Westchester and Putnam counties who excel athletically and academically as well as providing strong leadership and civic involvement in their school and community.

As the captain of the Harrison softball team this year, Christina became Harrison Softball’s All-Time leader in doubles and RBI’s (Runs Batted In). She is the second person in school history to have 100 hits and 100 RBI for her varsity career. Her accomplishments are even more astounding given that her sophomore year of playing was shortened due to a knee injury; yet that injury provided a path for her future.

In her interview with The Journal News, she talked about her goal of becoming a pediatric physical therapist. She was asked how she learned about the process of rehab for her knee injury and how that process reinforced her desire to become a physical therapist.

“At first it was tough, my dad helped me through it both physically and mentally,” DeCarlo answered in her interview with LoHud reporter Debbie Schechter. “My physical therapist helped me as well. Just being able to connect with my physical therapist made me realize that this is what I want to do. I want to be able to help people connect to them like my physical therapist was able to connect to me and help me rehab and get back to the sport.”

In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society, DeCarlo is a Peer Leader and a tutor for middle school and high school students. Outside of school, she volunteers with the Harrison Little League, teaching elementary school girls how to play softball.

“Working with the younger softball players is something I really enjoy doing because I’m around the kids,” DeCarlo said in the interview. “Having them look up to me as a varsity player is something I always appreciated and I always want to strive to be the best around them.”
