HHS Varsity Athletics Honors Two and Win Another League Championship

HHS Varsity Softball Team Wins League Championship

The Varsity Baseball team held two tournaments to honor two members of the baseball family. On May 6th, the HHS Varsity Baseball team played the 2nd Annual Andrew Gurgitano Memorial Baseball game. At an emotional opening ceremony, the team presented Andrew’s family with his jersey and his number #14 (which was being worn this year by his cousin Frankie Evangelista) will be retired at the end of what would have been Andrew’s senior season. George Kirby of Rye and Andrew Zink and Dean McCarthy of Harrison received the Andrew Gurgitano Scholarship and Father Chris, on behalf of St. Anthony of Padua, and the Rye baseball team made a financial donation to the Scholarship fund. The food vendor Chicken Joe’s also made a financial contribution and in the spirit of true sportsmanship, fed both teams after the game. The Huskies won 6-3.

The following Saturday, the Huskies held the Fifth Annual Dave Basso Memorial Tournament dedicated to Harrison’s beloved Maintenance and Grounds Foreman who passed away from cancer. Mr. Basso was a former Harrison athlete who was passionate about high school athletics. At the Senior Athletics Awards Ceremony in June, a scholarship will be awarded to a deserving senior(s) who exhibited the same dedication, passion, and work ethic that was the hallmark of Dave Basso. The White Plains Varsity Baseball team won the tournament and WP’s Damian Vignone was named MVP. The Huskies beat Vahalla in the consolation game.

With only two losses all season, the Varsity Girls Softball team is one of the hottest teams in Section 1 and look poised for a strong run in the Section 1 Tournament. The Huskies have won the League Championships for the past two years. Captain senior Christina DeCarlo became only the second player in Harrison softball history to have both 100 hits and 100 RBIs. Contributions from seniors Elisa Arcara and Sydney Woolf, paired with outstanding play from newcomers Lindsey McConway and Tamara Day, as well as amazing play from the rest of the team have shown that the Huskies are a force.
