From Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont

I hope you all had a happy and healthy Fourth of July weekend. It was wonderful seeing familiar friends and new faces at this year’s annual fireworks display in Downtown Harrison. I would like to recognize Roy Aletti for his generosity and hard work in once again delivering an event that was enjoyed by all.

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a Fourth of July ceremony that celebrated both the 100 th anniversary of the 19 th Amendment of the US Constitution, which gave women the right to vote, and the 100 th anniversary of the founding of the League of Women Voters. It was an important and very meaningful event and I was honored to be in attendance.

The Harrison Historical Society is featuring an exhibit, in the foyer of Town Hall, in recognition of Genevieve Riis, more commonly known as Ma Riis. Ma Riis Memorial Park honors the memory of this extraordinary Harrison resident and is located directly across form Town Hall. Ma Riis was a beloved volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Montrose, NY, visiting patients, sponsoring events and arranging field trips for the infirm. Her mission was to devote her energy to veterans and she has been recognized for donating over 10,000 volunteer hours. Thank you to Society members and to Diana Ricci for assembling the exhibit. When visiting our municipal building, be sure to take a moment to enjoy this wonderful collection of information on a truly inspiring woman. The exhibit is open to the public during Town Hall hours, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

I would like to direct your attention to one of Harrison’s most valuable resources. The Harrison Public Library is a valued asset and plays a vital role in enriching our entire community. Not only are we fortunate to have our Library staffed with skilled professionals who make a measurable difference in the services provided, the Library also offers an array of programs suitable for patrons of all ages. Please visit the Library at www.harrisonpl.org to find out about summer programs.
