Purchase 5 Club Send Handwritten Notes for The Letters Project

Fourth and fifth grade members of the Purchase 5 Club have been engaged in The Letters Project, a non-profit program that shares the stories of families whose children are struggling with terminal illness and developmental disabilities.

The Purchase students received the stories of children who have been struggling and have carefully written letters of encouragement and inspiration to them. As the students learned more about the likes of these children, they collected little mementoes such as stickers, small racing cars, and sea shells to name a few and are packing them with their letters to send to their pen pals.

“This project allows students to show support for these families and their children by writing them handwritten letters,” said Purchase 5 Club advisors Chandana Neureuther and Ellen Ann Hintermeister. “In this work, Purchase 5 members are taking a moment to walk in the shoes (empathize) with people whose lives are so sadly different from their own healthy lives.”

Purchase 5 is a touchstone co-authored by the faculty and staff of Purchase School over the past few years, defining five qualities that make Purchase a unique learning environment. They are empathy, patience, respect, responsibility, persistence.
