Sheet Metal Workers, Operating Engineers To Recruit Apprentices

Both recruitment periods start this spring.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The sheet metal workers and operating engineers unions have scheduled recruitment drives that start this spring. The former is looking for 20 apprentices from the region and the latter is looking for just five from several counties, including Dutchess and Columbia in the Hudson Valley.

Sheet Metal Workers

A recruitment window will be open from March 21 through Dec. 30 for 20 apprentices conducted by the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Sheet Metal Workers, Local Union No. 38 Craft Training Fund.

Applications can be obtained at union offices in Brewster at 38 Starr Ridge Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED) as recognized by official school authorities.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. Apprentices may be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within the jurisdiction of Local Union #38, which includes: the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester in New York; and the counties of Fairfield and Litchfield in Connecticut.
  • Must submit to drug testing, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must take a Math Test administered by Local Union #38. The trade requires an extensive amount of math and work with rulers.
  • Must provide Certificate of Release or Discharge From Active Duty form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

Operating Engineers

A shorter recruitment drive for fewer apprentices will be run by the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Operating Engineers of Albany, Local Union #106.

It will run from April 13 through Sept. 8.

The five openings represent the total number for five recruitment regions — the Capital District, Hudson Valley, Mohawk Valley, North Country, and Southern Tier regions.

Applications must be obtained and completed at the union office at 44 Hannay Lane, Glenmont, NY, between 8 and 11 a.m. or between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday and second Thursday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must be able to understand verbal instructions and read instructions and warnings given in English.
  • Must live within the geographic jurisdiction of Local Union #106 for at least six months prior to this recruitment. This includes the counties of: Albany, Broome, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Tioga, Warren, and Washington.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites in Local Union #106’s jurisdiction and required classes at sponsor’s training center.
  • Must pass a drug/alcohol screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.

These apprentice programs are registered with the Department of Labor and meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
