Adelphi University Hauppauge Center offers Aphasia Awareness Course

Continuing Medical Education for the First Responder and Community

Adelphi University’s Emergency Management Program is hosting a free 2-hour aphasia awareness course on Tuesday, June 10 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at their Hauppauge Center, 55 Kennedy Drive. In conjunction with the National Aphasia Association the course will promote aphasia awareness and recognition among Suffolk Counties First Responders and members of the community who wish to attend.

The Suffolk County Regional EMS Council has approved two hours of non-core continuing education credit for attending the course; county-based Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics who complete the training will receive credit. This is the first time the class is being offered to all EMS providers in the county.

Aphasia describes an impairment of the ability to communicate, not an impairment of intellect. Course objectives include:

  • Describe Aphasia
  • Identify a person who has aphasia
  • Utilize communication strategies to make encounters less stressful and more productive
  • Recognize the signs of aphasia – such as awareness stickers currently in use – to better respond to and communicate with those who are impaired during routine or emergency situations.

Pre-registration is required. There is no fee for this course; for information on this program contact, Abraham Levinson at 516-877-3431 or alevinson@adelphi.edu.
