PHOTOS: Smithtown Library Remodeling Coming to an End

After a complete makeover, from the paint to the furniture and a new brick patio, the Smithtown Library is well on its way to soon being open to the public.

Now that the shelving and furniture has been installed, library director, Robert Lusak, anticipates opening to the public within the next couple of weeks after a  few more necessary steps.

"The workers first need to do a water tap, which is necessary to do so the fire marshal can give an inspection and then approve moving in content," said Lusack.

Content such as books, CDs, DVDs and staff belongings will then be moved in, and according to Lusack, the final step is for the Village of the Branch building inspector to come in to give approval to open. Lusak said the Kings Park and Smithtown branches should be opening up around the same time.

“We are just about there,” said Lusak. “The Kings Park branch and Smithtown branch are neck and neck.”

The building, , has seen many changes. The main room is still set up the same way with the original murals on the back wall and the circulation desk opposite them, but now sports a new coat of paint, chandeliers and flooring plus new desks and shelving units. According to Assistant Director, Sue McManus, a new self checkout machine has been installed.

“Hopefully people will want to use that new feature,” McManus said.

In a new location, to the right of the main room sits the children’s room with a blue and green motif and dragonfly theme, said McManus. Off the children’s room is the new addition of a craft room.

Where the children’s room used to be, there is now a reading/sitting room, which, according to McManus is designed as more of an adult space, equipped with tables and chairs, chandelier lighting and an electric fireplace.  

Additionally, the building will now house a new young adult room.

"The room has a college feel with high cafe tables and rolling bookshelves. Young adults will also have space to bring their laptops," said McManus.

The Smithtown Library Foundation donated an outdoor brick patio to add to the new look, which is on the side of the library that faces Jericho and leads to the street and also the gazebo.

“With all the new changes, we are moving as fast as we can,” said Lusak. “We are looking forward to it.”
