1. Smithtown HS Students Debate, Vote In Mock Suffolk Legislature Session (patch.com) — Hauppauge’s William H. Rogers Legislature Building recently hosted Smithtown high school students for a mock Suffolk County legislative session, giving them a close-up look at how local government works. Students debated real-world issues like street racing penalties and drinking water protection, asked questions from the horseshoe, and heard directly from county legislators about public service.
2. Convicted sex trafficker Mitchell Johnson, of Farmingville, says 'I'm not a pimp' before a judge sentences him to 15 to 21 years in prison (newsday.com) — A convicted sex trafficker received 15 to 21 years in prison after exploiting a woman at the Commack Motor Inn and briefly losing track of her when an armed customer hid her at a Hauppauge Holiday Inn. Prosecutors say he used drugs, threats, and violence to control her until an assault in May 2023 triggered a police investigation.
3. Reymon Rodriguez, of Hauppague, sentenced to 9 years in killing of Bronx teacher Kimberly Collins Midgette (newsday.com) — A 20-year-old Hauppauge resident has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to reduced charges in a 2023 shooting that killed a Bronx teacher in Hempstead. Prosecutors say he was acting with a Bloods gang associate when they mistakenly opened fire on the victim’s car, and he also admitted related conspiracy charges in Suffolk County.
4. High school roundup: Lacrosse, baseball, softball, badminton and track and field results (newsday.com) — Hauppauge boys lacrosse earned a decisive 17–5 win over West Babylon, powered by Joe Bono’s dominance on faceoffs and strong scoring from Michael Granshaw and Griffin Segal. The roundup also highlights other Long Island high school lacrosse, baseball, softball, badminton, and track results from earlier this week.
5. Know When To Walk Away: Poker Shooting, Gas Station Holdups Land LI Man Lengthy Prison Term (dailyvoice.com) — A Mastic man has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison after a robbery spree that included holding up a gas station in Hauppauge, along with several other Long Island locations.
