SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — The Suffolk County Comptroller's Office has recovered more than $47,000 in unclaimed funds owed to the county, officials said.
Comptroller John Kennedy Jr. said his office successfully recovered $47,841.98 through New York State's unclaimed funds program.
Unclaimed funds can come from dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance refunds, utility deposits and stock certificates. The money is turned over to the New York State Comptroller's Office when accounts remain inactive.
"I am committed to safeguarding all taxpayer dollars," Kennedy said. "My Office has already submitted another 150 claims to New York State for review. I will ensure that all of Suffolk County's unclaimed funds are pursued and accounted for."
New York State maintains an online system allowing individuals and organizations to search for and claim money that may be owed to them.
Kennedy's office can be reached at 631-853-5040 or comptroller@suffolkcountyny.gov. The Suffolk County Comptroller's Fraud Hotline is available at 631-853-5018 or fraudhotline@suffolkcountyny.gov.
