Five Co-Workers Hurt, 1 Seriously, in Hauppauge Crash

Car crashed into a tree Monday afternoon, police say.

Police are investigating a single car crash that seriously injured a Queens man in Hauppauge Monday afternoon.

According to police, MD Karim, 48, of Jamaica, Queens, was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry east on Oser Avenue when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree near Plant Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. The vehicle caught on fire but was extinguished by a good Samaritan, police aid. There were four other occupants in the Camry, all co-workers commuting to work, police said.

A passenger in the vehicle, Faruk Omar, 26, of Jamaica, Queens, was transported to Southside Hospital Bay Shore where he was treated for serious non-life threatening injuries. The four other occupants were transported to local hospitals where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The investigation is continuing. The Camry was impounded for a safety check.
