Hauppauge fell slightly behind in the first quarter, 8-11, and remained trailing by the same 3-point margin throughout most of first half.
"We were lucky we were only down by three points. We probably should have been down by more," said coach Jamie Edson.
The Turning Point: The Eagles came onto the court stronger the second half, tightening their defensive game and using it to power their offense. Hauppauge scored 17 points in their third quarter, nearly as many points as the entire first half. This was partially aided by foul shots, as Alfano made 4 out of 6 in the second half.
The Quote: "We just started playing defense in the second half. We haven't played in two week, so we thought we might come out flat," Edson said.
The Bottom Line: Hauppauge needs to spend more time on the courts, practicing and getting their plays down. That way when its counts, the Eagles are ready to bring their game. The defense needs to come out strong and prevent their opponents from taking an early lead, so Hauppauge doesn't find itself in a hole it can't get out of in the future.
Key Stat: Julie WIlliams scored a career high of 15 game points.
Who's Next? Hauppauge girls basketball will hit the road to take on Bellport (1-0) on Jan. 6, 6 p.m.
