UPDATE: Suffolk Cop Whose Nose Was 'Nearly Severed' in Stabbing Remains Hospitalized

The police officer required facial surgery after being stabbed Saturday. The man who stabbed him is in critical condition.

UPDATE: 3 p.m. Sunday: The officer who was stabbed multiple times in the face and had his nose nearly severed underwent four hours of surgery for his injuries, police said. He remains hospitalized.

Police did not name the officer, but said he joined the Suffolk County Police Department in October 1995 and has been in the Emergency Service Section for 12 years.

Police on Sunday said the officer was stabbed while responding to a 911 call "requesting a check on the welfare of an individual acting irrationally and armed with knives."

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – A Suffolk County Police officer was seriously injured after being stabbed in the face Saturday afternoon and the man who stabbed him is in critical condition after being shot by another officer, police said.

It happened in Central Islip at about 1:20 p.m. According to police, officers responded to a 911 call at 281 Oakland Ave. and found 40-year-old Mark Caraway armed with knives.

Caraway was confrontational and stabbed an officer in the face, police said. Another officer shot Caraway once in the abdomen.

The officer was transported to a local hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition, police said. He required facial surgery.

Caraway, of Central Islip, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he is in critical condition.

Police did not specify the nature of the original 911 call or identify either officer. Detectives from the Homicide Squad and the Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating.
