Swimming Banned at Lake Ronkonkoma Beach...Again

Bacteria levels in the lake exceed state standards, health officials say.

Lake Ronkonkoma Beach is closed again due to the finding of bacteria at levels that exceed New York State standards, health officials said.

It’s the third time in recent weeks that the beach has been closed. Swimmers were allowed back in the lake last Friday before the latest ban was announced Monday afternoon.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in water contaminated with bacteria can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
