TEAM MOMO's Fight to Strike Out HLH

Join us on June 20th from 5-7pm at the Commack AMF Vet Lanes to support The Monique Tartt Foundation in their Fight to Strike Out HLH!!

Momo was a freshman at Binghamton University and (as many teenagers) contracted the EBV virus, known as Mono, in December of 2013. January 17th a persistent high fever warranted a trip to the ER. She passed away two weeks later on January 31, 2014.

HLH is a rarely diagnosed life-threatening immunodeficiency. It is often caused by an inherited problem of the immune system, which is called primary HLH. Momo’s form of HLH was considered secondary which was not inherited but rather brought about as a result of the EBV virus.

Cells of the immune system work improperly to destroy infected or damaged cells as they should. Because of this, the immune system becomes overstimulated and over activated and begins to damage the patient’s own tissues and organs, including the bone marrow, the liver and the brain.

HLH affects people of all ages and ethnic groups and there is no known cure. Chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants are the primary treatment for this disease and if left untreated or goes undiagnosed is fatal. Unfortunately, at this time, there is virtually no government funding for histiocytosis diseases.

The Monique Tartt Foundation is a 501(c)(3) (EIN 47-2945565) non-profit organization focused on increasing awareness of HLH and the importance of becoming a blood and bone marrow donor. The Monique Tartt Foundation aims at raising money to fund much needed research for safer, more effective treatment methods and ultimately a cure. Histiocytosis is a potentially fatal immunodeficiency with similarities to cancer.
