HAUPPAUGE, NY — Harry Chapin wasn't just a famous singer/songwriter, he was dedicated to helping people.

The Long Islander's charitable ways would show in his concern for those who couldn't afford food.

Long Island Cares established its Food Bank with Harry Chapin's name. Another lasting legacy of the activist-- a bust of Chapin was placed at the Hauppauge headquarters.

The design was put in the hands of acclaimed sculptor Susan Bahary, who, as it turned out, was Chapin's Huntington Bay neighbor decades ago.

"It really touched my heart because he was an amazing person," Bahary, a guest on Monday's "Patch AM," said. "It really has a special meaning for me to be able to do this."

Bahary, who came to the ceremony last week, now lives in the Bay Area. But Chapin's presence has never left her.

"He was such a strong, incredible source of energy and spirit," she said. "Everyone who got to know him or even talk to him really felt that."

Chapin died July 16, 1981 in a fiery crash on the Long Island Expressway.
