Brooklyn Heights Is BK's Darkest Winter Neighborhood: Report

The neighborhood topped a list of the borough's 10 spots with the least sunlight in the winter.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Residents in Brooklyn Heights might need to venture elsewhere in the borough to get some vitamin D this winter. The neighborhood topped a list of the 10 darkest Brooklyn neighborhoods in the wintertime, a new study shows.

Central Brooklyn neighborhoods made up the majority of the borough's 10 most light-deprived areas in winter, according to real estate website Localize.city. The site's data scientists used Geographic Information Systems to determine which neighborhoods in New York City get the most or least direct sunlight, according to the report.

Brooklyn Heights is the darkest in Brooklyn, followed closely by nearby Dumbo in third place and Downtown Brooklyn in fourth.

"(Though) these are waterfront neighborhoods — which often means great views and more sky — they have a higher concentration of taller buildings as well as some shorter ones in between, and those low-rise buildings tend to be the shadiest," the report said.
