Mayor Christens "Lunch Box" Ferry In Brooklyn Bridge Park

Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived in Brooklyn Bridge Park Monday morning to christen one of 20 new ferries that will join the harbor on May 1.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Mayor Bill de Blasio glided into Brooklyn Bridge Park aboard a new ferry named “Lunch Box,” which will join the New York Harbor in May, and was officially christened Monday morning.

The “Lunch Box” — which was named by the second graders of Bay Ridge’s P.S. 170 — is one of twenty ferries that will start transporting passengers between The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens on May 1, officials said.

The new boats were designed to be quiet, energy-efficient and are all equipped with wifi and a bar on board, the mayor boasted during the christening.

“They are part of — get ready, everyone — the next wave of transportation in our city,” said Mayor de Blasio, who was equally proud of his pun.

“That was good, huh?” De Blasio said. “I just blew you away with that one.”

Schedules for the new ferries — which will cost $2.75, the same price as a single-fare MetroCard — were also released Monday morning.

The christening — which began on Pier 1 at around 10:30 a.m. — marked the Mayor’s second arrival in Brooklyn via a unique mode of transportation in the past year. De Blasio garnered criticism in October when he landed in helicopter in the middle of Prospect Park.
