Grow With Us – HPS Announces Summer Learning Initiatives
Hicksville Public Schools has announced exciting new summer learning opportunities for its K-12 students with its "Grow with Us" Program.
Press release from the Hicksville Public Schools:
June 13 2020
Hicksville Public Schools has announced exciting new summer learning opportunities for its K-12 students with its “Grow with Us” Program. It is designed to engage students in hands-on and academic learning in three components: the Summer Gardening Project, Summer Reading Lists, and Summer Academic Resources.
During the Summer Gardening Project, K-12 students are invited to grow a garden and create a journal documenting their efforts. Gardens can be as simple as a windowsill herb garden or as complex and creative as our students’ imaginations. And, it provides a fun, hands-on learning experience students can complete at home while social distancing. Students who complete the summer gardening project will be celebrated when schools reopen at a special “Grow with Us” event. A comprehensive web page with step-by-step instructions has been created to provide our students with all the information they need to participate in this fun project: https://sites.google.com/hicksvillepublicschools.org/summer-gardening-project/home.

To help get our gardeners started, Stop & Shop donated over 5,100 seedpod starter kits to the school district. Many thanks to Samantha Lustig, Perishable Manager at the Stop & Shop at 530 Old Country Road in Hicksville, for supporting our students with this generous donation. Seedpod kits were made available at our elementary schools during the student supply pick-ups and at this week’s Moving Up Day ceremonies. Additional kits can be arranged for pick up at the District’s four Grab & Go locations by emailing ssimon@hicksvillepublicschools.org.
On rainy days or while waiting for their gardens to grow, K-12 students are encouraged to pick up a book, e-book, or audio book and enjoy summer reading/listening. There really is nothing like the mind’s journey our students can take this summer with a great book. Hicksville Public School’s Summer Reading Lists are now available at: https://sites.google.com/hicks...

Additionally, we want our students’ K-6 math and English Language Arts skills to stay sharp this summer. Math and reading packets are now available on the District website: https://sites.google.com/hicks...
Information about all three programs is available on the District website: www.hicksvillepublicschools.org, under Programs, Summer Programs. We can’t wait to see all our students again, and encourage everyone to keep active and “Grow with Us” this summer!
