Man Choked Girlfriend In Nassau While She Held Their Son: Police

The woman was holding the couple's 1-year-old at the time, police say. Officers were injured trying to arrest the man, police say.

HICKSVILLE, NY — A Uniondale man was accused of choking his girlfriend while she held their toddler in Hicksville on Saturday and then injuring officers who tried to apprehend him, Nassau police said.

Damar Collins, 36, was arguing with his girlfriend, 34, when things "became physical" at the Days Inn, at 828 South Oyster Bay Road, detectives said.

Collins grabbed the woman around her neck and obstructed her breathing while she was holding their 1-year-old son around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. Collins fled the inn, and the woman notified police on Monday, police said.

Officers escorted the woman on Tuesday for her safety and tried to arrest Collins, police said. Collins was violent and combative while resisting arrest, police said, and officers suffered injuries, police said.

Collins was found to be in possession of a metal pipe containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine, police said.

Collins was charged with two counts of criminal obstruction of breathing, one count of endangering the welfare of a child, one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of second-degree assault.

He was arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court, at 99 Main St., Hempstead.
