Man Dies Trapped In Burning New Cassel Home Despite Rescue Attempt: Fire Marshals

NEW CASSEL, NY — A man died after becoming trapped inside a burning New Cassel home Friday morning, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office.

A Village of Hempstead Fire Department chief, who also serves as a Nassau County fire marshal, arrived at the scene alongside Nassau County police officers and another fire marshal who was on his way to work. Officials said they made a "valiant but sadly unsuccessful attempt" to enter the burning home and rescue the trapped occupant before firefighters arrived.

Nassau County FireCom received multiple 911 calls reporting the house fire on Arlington Street at 7:49 a.m., fire marshals said. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the second floor and reports of a person trapped inside, officials said.

Approximately 50 firefighters brought the fire under control within 45 minutes, fire marshals said.

Fire marshals said the Red Cross is assisting three displaced adults, while the Town of North Hempstead Building Department will assess the home's extensive damage.

The NCFM Investigators and NCPD Arson/Bomb Squad detectives are investigating the cause of the fire, fire marshals said.

Westbury Fire Department received mutual aid from Carle Place, Hicksville, Mineola, and Syosset fire departments – all under the command of Chief Tim Stewart, fire marshals said.
