A New Cassel woman tried to kill herself when she was being arrested for abusing two children in her custody, Nassau Police said.
According to police, Child Protective Services went to a home on Railroad Avenue in New Cassel at 4 p.m. on March 5 to conduct a welfare check on two girls, ages 8 and 11, and also investigate possible child abuse. Police say that both girls had marks on them consistent with being struck by a cord, as well as bite marks. They were both taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.
At 9:30 a.m. on March 7, Child Protective Services requested police at the girls' home to arrest their guardian, Nicaisse Demonsieru, 34. After being told she was under arrest, police say Demonsieru grabbed a pill bottle and swallowed and unknown number of pills. Police say she then resisted arrest by violently pulling away from the officers, injuring one of them.
