From Hicksville Schools:Congratulations to Hicksville Middle School students Ruchika Chandra, Sasha Ger and Zahel Nasari for their impressive entries into the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition. This year’s theme was “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Ruchika won the first-place award, Zahel won second and Sasha third for VFW Post 3211.

Conducted nationwide, the VFW-sponsored youth essay competition gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. All three students were congratulated by Hicksville Middle School Principal Mara Jorisch, District Supervisor of Social Studies and Home and Careers Dr. Rose Borda and their teachers. Patriot’s Pen is open to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students through VFW posts throughout the country.
