Man Stunned After Running From Nassau Crash Had Loaded Gun: PD

NEW CASSEL — A Selden man had to be subdued by a stun gun after he ran away from a car crash in New Cassel carrying a loaded handgun inside of a backpack on Tuesday, according to a Nassau County police news release.

Detectives said Jason Jackson, 40, was seen driving a silver BMW at a high rate of speed northbound along Sheridan Street, then crashed it into another parked car before flipping over at about 12: 25 a.m. Jackson, who got out of the BMW through a shattered driver’s-side window, ran away from officers and repeatedly tried to reach into a backpack carrying what was later found to be a loaded gun, police said. Officers demanded Jackson to stop, but they were “eventually forced to deploy” a stun gun for their own safety, police stated in the news release.

Officers were exposed to a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine inside Jackson’s backpack, and a second gun was found inside the BMW, according to police. A second man, who was stopped at the scene of the crash, David Robinson, 38, of Schenectedy, was determined to be a passenger in the BMW Jackson was driving, police said.

Neither man was transported to the hospital, a police spokesman said.

Both Jackson and Robinson are facing multiple charges, including second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.

Jackson faces an additional two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, as well as two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He faces up to 15 years in prison based on the top weapons charge.

The pair were arraigned in Mineola Tuesday.
