Sleepy's in Hicksville Announces Several Layoffs

The company said the layoffs will reduce duplicative jobs and improve efficiency following a recent merger.

Sleepy’s employees in Hicksville were recently informed that several employees will experience layoffs thanks to the company's recent merger with Mattress Firm Holding Corp.

The recent WARN filing is a result of Mattress Firm’s efforts to be more efficient and reduce duplicative jobs that were created through the acquisition.

The WARN filing, under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, protects workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notice in advance of multiple layoffs.

According to Jody Putnam, Talent and Integration Officer of Mattress Firm, the company has worked closely with employees impacted by the layoffs to give them ample notice, as well as severance packages and job placement services.

“Mattress Firm is grateful for the meaningful contributions of each of these team members and sincerely wishes them the best in the future,” Putnam said in a statement to Patch. “We are confident in our continued success as we remain committed to delivering value to our customers.”

Newsday says the company announced Friday it will lay off 28 employees.

Mattress Firm announced the completion of its $780 million acquisition of Sleepy’s in February, according to Street Insider.

Due to the acquisition of Sleepy’s, which is the nation's second largest specialty mattress retailer, customers will see store signs across Long Island change from Sleepy’s to Mattress Firm. The company says it will still provide the same service and have the same employees. Well, minus the ones that will be laid off.
