$10K Study to Determine If Huntington Can Afford Parking Garage in Village

The consultant study into Huntington's parking problem will take about three months.

A $10,000 consultant study into whether a parking garage, which would help with the lack of parking available in Huntington Village, is economically practical was approved by the Town’s Economic Development Corporation at its Jan. 30 meeting.

In this study, Level G Associates of Old Bethpage will review and update previous Huntington Village parking studies, complete a conceptual design of a parking garage and assess the sizing of the project and the economic impact.

The Town requested a proposal for a parking garage between New and Green Streets in December 2015. This study is the latest step the Huntington Village Parking Consortium has made to address the shortage of parking in the Village during peak hours.

“At each step in this process, we have learned more about the benefits and downsides of various parking options,” Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said in a press release. “With demand for the limited parking in Huntington Village remaining strong, especially at peak periods, now is the time to explore the parking garage option in greater depth.”

The study is expected to take about three months and looks to give an understanding into what it will take, project development and economics-wise, to get a parking deck project built at this location.

“The EDC understands how availability of adequate parking affects the economic health of the village and its future, and is happy to commission this study as a logical next step in the process of considering the various courses of action,” EDC Chairman Rob Ripp said.

If the study proves the parking garage study is economically attainable, the next step for the EDC would be to conduct a more detailed study into the Town obtaining financing.

“I look forward to the results of this study and the consortium’s discussion of its conclusions,” Petrone said.

The Huntington Village Parking Consortium includes the EDC, the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Village Business Improvement District and the Paramount Theater.
