HUNTINGTON, NY — Two men were arrested after police say they tried to scam an elderly Huntington woman out of thousands of dollars on Tuesday afternoon. Felix Collado, 43, of the Bronx, and Jose A. Cabrera-Urena, 29, of the Bronx, both face attempted grand larceny charges.

An 83-year-old woman received a phone call earlier Tuesday from someone who claimed the woman’s granddaughter was arrested and charged with a DWI, police said. The caller said someone would come to her home to collect $7,500 to cover the granddaughter’s attorney fees and provided the woman with a numeric code, police said.

The woman determined the call was a scam and called 911 around 11:30 a.m., police said. Officers from the Second Precinct worked with the woman to watch her house during the exchange, police said.

Collado and Cabrera-Urena were each charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. Cabrera-Urena was also charged with reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic violations. Both were held overnight at the Second Precinct and scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
