2 Walt Whitman HS Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

All finalists, including the two South Huntington students, are considered for National Merit Scholarship Awards to be offered in 2023.

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — Ned Hunter and Anthony Maida, seniors at Walt Whitman High School, were named finalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Awards, the South Huntington School District announced.

The National Merit Scholarship Program determined which of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September met all the requirements to advance to prestigious finalist standing in the competition.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Each year, high school students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). All finalists are considered for National Merit Scholarship Awards to be offered in 2023.

Hunter and Maida, after qualifying as semifinalists, have since met several requirements to advance to finalist standing. They now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships to be offered this spring.
