SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A teenager was sentenced to prison Monday in connection with the murder of a man a couple of years ago, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced.

Ramon Lyons, 16, of Huntington Station, was sentenced to 12 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. Lyons fatally shot Luis Cameron Rimmer-Hernandez, 21, in August 2021, Tierney said.

"At only 14 years old, this defendant senselessly took Cameron Rimmer-Hernandez's life away from him," Tierney said in a news release. "My office recommended that this defendant serve the maximum sentence under current New York law, which is 15 years to life in prison. While courts take a juvenile's age into consideration at sentencing, we must never forget to consider the loss of the victim's life and the pain that loss causes their loved ones. Our hearts go out to the Rimmer-Hernandez family and his friends."

Rimmer-Hernandez drove to Lowndes Avenue in Huntington Station to meet up with some friends on Aug. 9, according to court documents. Lyons, then 14 years old, ran up to the victim and fired approximately seven shots from a 9 mm handgun, striking Rimmer-Hernandez multiple times in the chest and arm, prosecutors said. Lyons then ran to his apartment, less than half a mile away, the DA said.

Lyons admitted to the homicide on social media before his arrest, officials said.
