3 Kittens From Babylon Backyard Colony Ready For Homes: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week

The bonded siblings are thriving in foster care and volunteers hope they can be adopted with a sibling — or even together as a trio.

HUNTINGTON, NY — Alvin, Grover and Penelope, three 3-month-old siblings from a backyard colony in Babylon, are this week’s adoptable pets of the week at Grateful Paw Cat Shelter.

“Spring is a season of new beginnings,” the shelter said, “and for three tiny kittens from a backyard colony in Babylon, that new beginning is just getting started.”

The kittens arrived at Grateful Paw at the end of April. Born to a feral mother who was still nursing a previous litter when she became pregnant again, the shelter said their story is “one of resilience, survival, and hope.”

Two older siblings from the same mother had already found homes through Grateful Paw, and now volunteers say it is Alvin, Grover and Penelope’s turn.

Their mother has since been trapped, spayed and returned, ensuring she will not have to continue raising litter after litter outdoors, the shelter said.

Alvin, Grover and Penelope are now safe in foster care, growing stronger every day as they prepare to make their debut at the shelter.

Tiny Penelope may be the smallest of the three, but volunteers say she makes sure everyone knows she is there.

“This petite little tortie is as cute as a button,” the shelter said, adding that she is happiest when playing with her brothers and has “the loudest purr motor of them all.”

Alvin, a handsome tabby, is described as “pure kitten energy wrapped in fur.”

“Curious, playful, and always ready for adventure, he’s usually the first to investigate a new toy, climb a new cat tree, or discover a new way to entertain himself,” the shelter said.

Grover, a dark tabby, is the most tireless of the trio.

“Grover seems to run on endless batteries,” the shelter said. “Wrestling is his favorite sport, and thankfully his siblings can keep up with him.”

When he is not tackling Alvin or chasing Penelope, Grover has appointed himself the household cleaning supervisor, according to volunteers.

“Sweeping? Mopping? Grover is right there ‘helping’ every step of the way,” the shelter said.

The staff is already preparing for his enthusiastic participation in the daily cleaning routine once he arrives.

Like many kittens, the three have hearty appetites and come running when Temptations treats appear.

But more than anything, the shelter said, Alvin, Grover and Penelope want attention, affection and companionship.

“They are looking for families who will shower them with love, provide plenty of interactive playtime, and help them continue blossoming into the wonderful cats they are meant to become,” the shelter said.

The kittens are currently thriving in foster care and are scheduled to be spayed and neutered and receive their final vaccinations on June 16. They are expected to arrive at the shelter around June 20, when they will officially begin searching for their forever homes.

All three have tested negative for FeLV and FIV, are parasite-free, and have had their ears, eyes and hearts checked and cleared. They are litter box trained and will be microchipped when they undergo surgery.

The shelter says the siblings have a special bond after spending every day of their young lives together — playing, wrestling, sleeping in kitten piles and navigating the world side by side.

Because of that, volunteers would love to see them adopted with a sibling, or ideally, all three together.

“While we will consider a single adoption if there is already a young cat or kitten in the home to provide companionship, our dream would be to see Alvin, Grover, and Penelope continue their journey together as a trio,” the shelter said.

After a rough start in a backyard colony, the kittens are ready for the next chapter of their story — “a chapter filled with warm laps, endless toys, gentle hands, and the forever homes they so deserve,” the shelter said.

Those interested in meeting Alvin, Grover and Penelope can call Grateful Paw Cat Shelter at 631-757-4517 or email cats@laphuntington.org. The shelter said people can also follow the kittens’ progress and anticipated arrival on its Facebook page, or meet them in person after June 20.

Grateful Paw Cat Shelter is located at 3 Verleye Ave. in East Northport. Shelter hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., with Thursday evening visits available from 7 to 9 p.m. by appointment.

“Could your home be the happy ending these three little blossoms have been waiting for?” the shelter said.
