The SHEF in Motion event supports South Huntington schools' art, dance, and music programs.

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — An annual "fundracer" is coming to Huntington Station on Saturday, the South Huntington School District announced.

The South Huntington Educational Foundation (SHEF) in Motion 5K/10K Run/Walk, (formerly "Miles for Michael") is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.

The race starts at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, winds through the surrounding neighborhood, and ends back at the high school.

The run was established to support the arts, music, dance and technology programs in South Huntington schools.

There is also a 1 mile Fun Run for Kids on Saturday, as well as virtual 5K and 10K runs. A new option for this year is TEAM participation. "Often the Art/Dance and Music programs are the first to be affected by budgetary cutbacks when necessary," the school district wrote. "The goal is to continue to support these programs until the need no longer exists."

In the past years, SHEF has provided more than $100,000 in improvements.

A few examples of SHEF's accomplishments, the school district said, include:

  • Reinstatement of Silas Wood/Stimson Middle School Theater Program.
  • Funded the creation of the recording studio at Walt Whitman High School.
  • Complete replacement of percussion set for the middle school music program.
  • New sound system for Oakwood Primary Center's main performing stage.
  • Replacement of all needed cell and brass instruments for Birchwood and Maplewood Intermediate Centers.

The community can also contribute by buying raffle tickets to the SHEF in Motion Basket Raffle. There are more than 50 amazing baskets being offered including a round of golf for four at Cold Spring Country Club and an overnight stay in the Chateau Room at Oheka Castle.
