First Rabies Case Confirmed In Huntington After Rabid Raccoon Found In Melville

A rabid raccoon was found near Cranberry Court, prompting increased monitoring and public health warnings, town officials say.

HUNTINGTON, NY — A case of rabies has been confirmed in the Melville area, marking the first reported case within the Town of Huntington, officials said.

According to the Town of Huntington, the Suffolk County Health Department identified the case after a raccoon carcass was recovered near Cranberry Court, in the vicinity of Costco, and submitted for testing by Animal Control.

Town officials said Animal Control officers will increase monitoring and screening of animals that may carry rabies, particularly raccoons and feral cats.

The town is also coordinating with local animal shelters and rescue partners to evaluate reports of animals exhibiting symptoms consistent with rabies infection.

Officials said those signs can include disorientation, unprovoked aggression, and paralysis.

Any suspected cases will be handled under established public health protocols, and all bite incidents involving potential rabies vector species — including raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes and feral cats — will be documented and reported to the Suffolk County Health Department for follow-up.

Rabies is a viral disease typically transmitted through saliva, often via bites or scratches. Officials say while the disease is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, it is preventable with prompt medical evaluation and post-exposure treatment.

Residents are urged to avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals and to ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.

The town said it will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
