HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — Northwell Health’s Huntington Hospital has become the first hospital on Long Island to perform a cementless partial knee replacement, marking a milestone in orthopedic care in the region.
The procedure was performed by orthopedic surgeon Michael Bisogno, who used the Oxford Cementless Partial Knee Implant developed by Zimmer Biomet. The implant represents a newer approach designed to improve recovery time and long-term outcomes for patients with knee arthritis.
The implant was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2024, has been used internationally for more than 20 years and is among the most widely utilized knee implants worldwide.
Unlike traditional knee replacements, which rely on bone cement, the cementless implant features a porous metal surface that allows the patient’s natural bone to grow into the implant. This process creates a biologic fixation that may last longer than cemented alternatives.
“This is an exciting advancement in knee replacement technology,” Bisogno said. “By allowing the bone to grow directly into the implant, we are creating a more natural and potentially longer-lasting solution for patients. We’re also seeing early benefits of the partial knee replacement, including improved range of motion and faster recovery compared to traditional total knee replacements.”
Partial knee replacement procedures focus only on the damaged portion of the knee, preserving healthy bone and ligaments. About 50 percent of patients with knee arthritis may be candidates for this less invasive approach, according to hospital officials.
The cementless technique can further speed recovery, with many patients returning home the same day and resuming normal activities sooner. Early outcomes at Huntington Hospital have shown improved mobility and reduced complication risks, including lower infection rates.
One of Bisogno’s first patients, Fredis Carbajal, 63, of Huntington Station, said the experience made a noticeable difference in his recovery.
“The fact that I was able to go home the same day and start getting back to my routine so quickly really made a difference,” Carbajal said. “I feel stronger every day.”
