HUNTINGTON, NY — Cookie, a young mother cat who “has already been through so much,” is this week’s Huntington adoptable pet of the week.
Cookie is about a year old, “still just a baby in many ways,” according to Grateful Paw Cat Shelter. She is a dark tiger cat with black tufts of fur on the tips of her ears and glittering yellow eyes.
Before winter arrived, Cookie, along with her brother and sister, began showing up in a Good Samaritan’s yard in Wyandanch. Day after day, Cookie returned for food, gentle attention and the kindness she needed, the shelter said.
When the first major snowstorm hit, someone in the family noticed Cookie was pregnant and knew she could not remain outside. Because the family already had a full house of cats, Cookie was brought into their laundry room, where she stayed warm, safe and cared for while awaiting the arrival of her babies.
On March 2, Cookie gave birth to two kittens, Cupcake and Sprinkles. Within a week, Grateful Paw received a call asking for help.
Cookie and her babies came into the shelter’s care, where Cookie was examined by the shelter veterinarian and placed into foster care.
“She proved to be an incredibly devoted mother, always keeping her babies close and showering them with love and protection,” the shelter said.
Now that her kittens are growing up and Cookie has been spayed, shelter volunteers say she is finally getting the chance to simply be a young cat herself.
Cookie has adjusted well at the shelter and gets along wonderfully with the other cats, the shelter said. While she can be a little reserved at first, she loves affection and attention.
“Chin scratches, head rubs, and back scratches are the quickest way to win her heart,” the shelter said, adding that volunteers believe she is “destined to become someone’s perfect lap cat.”
Cookie loves lounging on top of the cat condos, watching the world outside the window, or curling up in a cozy cuddle bed for a nap. She also has a playful side.
Feather toys were a favorite when she was in foster care playing with her babies, and now at the shelter, she “absolutely goes crazy” for a fishing pole toy with an orange worm attached, pouncing and chasing it across the floor with excitement, the shelter said.
Cookie also has a strong appetite. Now that one of the more dominant cats in the room has been adopted, Cookie proudly makes her way to the food plate first.
Cookie has tested negative for FeLV, FIV and parasites. She has had her eyes, ears and heart checked, and she is litter box trained, spayed and microchipped.
Cookie is currently waiting in the Purple Room at Grateful Paw Cat Shelter for her forever family. She will also be available at the shelter’s annual Kitten Shower adoption event on May 31.
Shelter volunteers said they would “truly love to see her adopted,” especially before she is overlooked because of the many kittens available this time of year.
“And if someone happens to open their heart and home to Cookie and her babies together, that would be even more special,” the shelter said.
Those interested in meeting Cookie can call Grateful Paw Cat Shelter at 631-757-4517, email cats@laphuntington.org, visit the shelter’s Facebook page or stop by in person.
The shelter is located at 3 Verleye Ave. in East Northport and is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., with Thursday evening appointments available from 7 to 9 p.m.
“Most importantly, Cookie deserves a family of her own,” the shelter said. “After spending her young life surviving outdoors and then raising babies, this tiny petite girl deserves to finally be adored, protected, and loved the way she has always deserved.”
